Gear UP! for a math lesson...

  • My favorite component of CDM’s Secret’s of Circles exhibition, partially designed by Peggy Monahan – currently at the Exploratorium, is the Gear UP! exhibit.

The stackable gears and elegantly designed mechanisms allow visitors to explore gear ratios. By stacking fears of different sizes, they can control the speed-per-tooth. So, a slow spin on one end of a gear chain, becomes a blurry whirl on the other.. It’s also an incredibly aesthetic math lesson.

The gears pictured are part of the permanent and traveling exhibition. My CDM team has recently redesigned and repackaged them to be much more affordable for stand-alone sale as components.
